Promise Student Nacarre Turner

Hello. My name is Nacarre Turner. I am a 3rd year transfer student here at UCSB. My major is currently Economics and Accounting, which I plan to use to pursue a career in the field of accounting. I transferred from a community college back in the Bay Area by the name of Los Medanos College. While being there, I was able to attain a double AS degree; one in Business Administration and the other in Accounting. Taking the community college route benefited me in various ways. Not only was it extremely helpful financially, it also helped me ease my way into higher education, demystifying something I was so unfamiliar with.

I grew up in Richmond, CA, in an environment with less than ideal circumstances. My household included just my mother and I, who did her absolute best to raise me. Despite my father not living with me, he too at times did what he could to have an influence in my life. Part of what they both did an amazing job of was stressing the importance of my education. They were really engaged in my academic life, ensuring I was always on top of my schooling. However, neither of them went to college, so it was little to nothing they could tell me about higher education or what the college experience would be like. Fortunately, I was able to run into a handful of very special and amazing people and programs throughout my life that helped lead me to the water. Most were people who worked with youth who they realized had a smaller window of opportunity. Others were just people willing to share their knowledge.

I took full advantage of what resources and support was offered to me, which has led me to where I am today. I am extremely motivated to proceed down my path towards success, remaining open-minded as I continue to grow and evolve everyday. My childhood environment and circumstances serve as a severe piece of that motivation.
