Howard Giles receives coveted Panuzio Distinguished Emeriti Award.
Each year since 1983, one or two distinguished emeriti from across the UC system have been selected to receive the Constantine Panuzio Distinguished Emeriti Award. This singular honor, named for a UCLA Sociology Professor who is widely considered the architect of the UC pension system and a staunch and indefatigable champion of emeriti faculty, recognizes the achievements of individuals who, after a distinguished career, continue to make significant contributions to their disciplines, campuses, and communities. This year’s recipient, Howard Giles, exemplifies all that the Panuzio Award is designed to honor.
In his lengthy and distinguished career, Professor Giles has held numerous positions at UCSB, among them, Chair of the Communications Department, Graduate Program Director in Communications, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education. After retiring, Professor Giles was the Edward A. Dickson Emeriti Professor from July 2020 to March 2023. Professor Giles also served on the board of the UCSB Emeriti Association, providing yet another example of his ongoing commitment to our campus.
Professor Giles’ CV offers insight into a life rich both in scholarly endeavors covering a wide range of interests (intergenerational communication, interpersonal and intergroup communication, and intercultural communication, to list but a few), as well as numerous academic honors and accolades from home and abroad. The CV also reveals a person deeply committed to the well-being of his community. From his 1994 graduation from the Santa Barbara Citizens Police Academy, Professor Giles has maintained a strong connection to the department, receiving awards ranging from the Reserve Lieutenant’s Award to the California Reserve Police Officers’ Association Meritorious Service Award.
The UCSB Emeriti Association congratulates Professor Howard Giles upon his receipt of the Panuzio Award. We also want to take this opportunity to express enormous gratitude to our friend and colleague, Howie Giles, for his many years of dedicated service to UCSB, most especially, to the Emeriti Association.
