Promise Student Joselyn Herrera-Velazquez

Freshman: Major: Pre-Bio, Minor: Japanese

Hello, I am Joselyn Herrera-Velazquez. I am from Santa Maria, California. Where most of your strawberries come from. I am aspiring to be a Pediatric Doctor. I personally enjoy being indoors from time-to-time when out of my shell I like to go out with friends and take nature walks. I am the oldest of two younger brothers and first from my family to go to a four-year institution. My dream goal is to graduate and go to a Medical School (still don’t know where) and travel the world to countries in need of healthcare.

I am a Biology major hoping to learn more about the meticulous side of the science world. As a little kid I enjoyed the facts and preciseness of the science world. Although as of right now I am learning that chemistry could be my enemy. But they do say keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Although I am struggling, it doesn’t mean that I will give up. It’s a passion of mine that I will continue to question and wonder about. I also have included a Minor in Japanese in hopes to work on it long term and make it a Major. I am fascinated by the language, and wanted to learn it, and one day travel abroad to Japan and help broaden my horizons. I want to learn about the technologies and methods of science that are used in Japan to help me better understand the methods of Health care.

I am part of the school's Girls Water Polo Club team. It is something I am truly passionate about. I started my junior year in High School and felt so connected and bonded with people and sport. This sport has taught me how to be a leader and how to create a community. I also enjoy arts and crafts, making small trinkets that hold sentimental value. In my free time I enjoy watching anime. I like that I can decompress when having time. Over the summer I went backpacking, which was enjoyable. Seeing the way nature can look as if it was in a setting of multiple seasons. During this time, I overcame many physical obstacles, many were painful and some were tiring, but these all made me realize that I am capable of many things. Now there is no excuse to complain and say that I can’t do something because comparing it to backpacking it should possibly be easier to do.
